Ice Rink is Ready to Go!!

Our ice rink (including the social skating rink) at Potter Greens Park is ready to go. Due to the unusual warmer weather around Christmas then really cold temperatures, we were unable to have the ice ready earlier.

Please note that the skate trailer will not always be available. You may have to put your skates on at the benches outside. We hope to post a schedule of some times we will have the skate trailer open by Feb.4.

Also, our rink maintenance individual (William) tries to clear the rink soon after snowfalls, but please just grab one of the big shovels around the rink and push the snow to the side if you get there before it gets done….especially for light amounts of snow. It’s great exercise and a huge help to us.

Here are some important rules to remember about our rink:

  • Skate tags (dark orange) are required – or a current league membership card.
  • Helmets are required for ages 16 and under.
  • Please don’t use the rink if weather is above 2°C.
  • The rink hours of operation are 8am-10pm daily.
  • Please be respectful of those using the rink, clearing the rink, or living in proximity of the rink.

Thanks to William for his work on the rink.  Have fun and be safe everyone!

City of Edmonton Census

Starting April 1, census workers will be going door-to-door in Edmonton to gain some important information.

Information collected will be used to help determine how much funding goes to areas which impacts police, fire, and other vital services.

If you have any questions about the census, please call the City of Edmonton at (780) 496-8008 Monday to Friday from 8:30-4pm.

Also, the city needs upwards of 1400 people to help with the census. If you are in need of employment, please call the number above.

Casino Volunteers Needed

The LECL relies on casino fundraising to pay for different initiatives. Our last few went toward building the new Suder Greens playground/park. Now we would like to replace the skate trailer with something more substantial and visually appealing. You can help us by volunteering to work a casino shift for us.

The casino will be Wednesday, June 27th and Thursday, June 28th at the Palace Casino at WEM. There are day and night shifts available. It is very easy to do and a professional walks you through every task. You can bring someone you know to work with you or you can meet new people living in your community.

We are required to have our volunteer list in advance. Please contact Anita soon to sign up (anitakresak@gmail.com or tel: 780-634-6229).

Reminder: Use Your WEM passes!

Just a reminder for those of you that got the free family passes for WEM with your Lewis Estates Community League memberships – they expire February 9, 2012!

Go and use them up! Invite your neighbours and make it a neighbourhood event!

~ Board of Directors, Lewis Estates Community League ~

Message from the LECL Board of Directors

Like all residents of Lewis Estates, those of us on this community league’s board were shocked and saddened by the events of this past week.  Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the young man who so tragically lost his life.

It’s a reminder to all of us that we need to work together to help keep our community safe. Some things we can do:

  • Contact Edmonton Police Services if you notice suspicious activity in your area.
  • Get to know your neighbours and look out for each other.
  • Help set up and run a Neighbourhood Watch program.

Contact us at lewisestates@hotmail.com or Like us on Facebook if you have ideas you’d like to share.

EPS Reminds Us Not to Open the Door to Strangers

The Edmonton Police Service is reminding citizens to stay alert and not open their door to strangers or allow them into their homes. There have been reports of a suspicious male going door-to-door and allegedly pretending to be in need of cash for a tow truck or locksmith. The suspect my also ask to use your personal computer to contact their in-vehicle security company. Some people have let the suspect into their homes. While homeowners get some money, the suspect allegedly takes items like laptops, and small electronic devices like music players, cell phones and tablets. “Be aware of suspicious activity in your community,” says Staff Sgt. Dale Fenrich with West Division’s Criminal Investigation Section. “This type of crime is preventable and people should take the proper precautions to protect themselves.” The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 20-25 years old, 5’9” and about 155 lbs with dirty blond or brown hair. He has been reported wearing a light blue or grey jacket, jeans, and may have slight growth of facial hair. If you see suspicious activity in your neighbourhood call the EPS complaint line at 780-423-4567. If the suspicious male attends your house, do not let him in or give him money, call 9-1-1.
